NSU softball splits opening day

ARKADELPHIA, Ark. – Northeastern State split their first day falling 9-2 at Henderson State and besting Lincoln 9-1 in five innings on Friday afternoon.

Kelsey Harmon and Carlee Gann both had two hit days and a pair of RBI on opening day with Sylver Collins getting the win in the first against the Blue Tigers. 

In the opener against Henderson State, the RiverHawks drew seven walks but couldn't get a timely hit.  Northeastern State left seven runners on-base with Jessica Boone and Sierra Crick both drawing a pair of free bases. 

The Reddies struck first in the opening frame with four runs on three hits,and the RiverHawks would issue three walks in the inning.  Henderson State extended their lead in the next inning scoring on a one-out single and a fielder's choice. 

Northeastern State picked up a run in the third on a two-out RBI by Paige Gann but in the bottom half HSU grabbed a run on a two out double down the right field line.

Harmon gave NSU's second run of the game with a single before Henderson State scored two more in the sixth.

In game two, NSU loaded the bases in the opening inning with no outs where they scored on a Blue Tiger error and passed ball.  Paige Gann added a run on a single to center field to give the RiverHawks a 3-1 lead.   Northeastern State continued to do damage in the second after starting the inning with three walks.  Lincoln hit a batter to score a run for NSU and Boone walked in the RiverHawks fifth run.  Following a change in the circle, Haley Acrey gave NSU a 6-1 lead on a fielder's choice.

The scoring continued in the third with Harmon tripling in a run and Carlee Gann hitting a sac fly to pull NSU ahead by seven.  After a scoreless fourth inning, the RiveHawks won the by run-rule in the fifth on a one out error to score Crick in from second.

Northeastern State will return to the field on Saturday to face Missouri Western at noon and then Ouachita Baptist at 2 p.m.
