NSU baseball rallies past #7 St. Edward's, 10-8

AUSTIN, Texas – Northeastern State scratched and clawed their way and scored three runs in the top of the ninth to force extra innings at #7 St. Edward's and later picked up go-ahead runs with two-outs in the tenth to win 10-8 on the road.

Saturday's win gave the RiverHawks (2-1) the series over the nationally ranked Hilltoppers (1-2) who went to the NCAA Tournament last season after winning their conference's postseason tournament.

"We learned a lot about ourselves this weekend," said head coach Jake Hendrick.  "Of the 25 available players, we used I believe 20 in today's game.   Early in the year it's about figuring out what you're capable of doing and when you are able to compete in a fashion that lets you come back and win a game on the road, a lot is learned about your identity."

"We had tremendous competitiveness in all three phases, the mound, at the plate, and defensively.   I haven't been a part of a baseball game that fun in a while."

Northeastern State scored runs in each of the final five innings but most importantly it was the three-run rally in the ninth.  The RiverHawks loaded the bases with no-outs on back-to-back walks and a single.  Dakota Woods singled to third base to score Jordan Payne in from third, then Derek Shedden singled to center to keep the bases loaded and score Zach Henderson.  Following a strike out, St. Ed's threw a wild pitch to tie the game at nine and force extra innings.

In the tenth, NSU grounded out and struck out looking before Dakota Morse smashed a homer over the left field fence for the go-ahead run.  Dylan Adams followed up later in the inning with a single down the left field line to one more insurance run.

Shayne Warren (1-0) came out of the bullpen in the ninth finished the game by putting the Hilltopers down in order in the tenth.

Dustin Berrong started the game and went three innings for his first appearance in over a year after suffering an injuring during the 2015 season.

The RiverHawks had 11 hits with Morse having a three-hit afternoon and two RBI.

Northeastern State will be off until Feb. 14 where they will visit Rogers State for a single nine inning game in Claremore.
