HAYS, Kan. – Northeastern State's offensive clicked late but they would fall twice to Fort Hays State on Friday. The Tigers run-ruled NSU 10-2 in the opener and fell 6-4 in the nightcap.
Friday's losses to Fort Hays State (8-12, 2-0 MIAA) dropped the RiverHawks to 2-2 this season in MIAA play.
In the opener, NSU jumped ahead in the first on
Kelsey Harmon triple and she was brought home on a
Sierra Crick single. The lead would be NSU's only one of the game and the Tigers plated two runs in the next two frames. The RiverHawks made the game 4-2 in the fourth picking up a run a FHSU error.
However, Fort Hays State continued to add to their lead and scored three in the fifth and sixth. Two errors in both innings plagued the RiverHawks in both frames with three runs crossing home unearned.
Carlee Gann had two of the RiverHawks six hits.
Mollie Carter (1-1) went five innings and
Sylver Collins threw during the sixth.
Errors continued to hurt Northeastern State in the nightcap with three Tiger runs being scored off of two NSU errors.
Ryan Martin gave Northeastern State a one-run lead in the third before an error tied the game in the bottom half of the frame. The Tigers went ahead on the fourth on a solo-home run and in the fifth they added four runs on three hits; a NSU error allowed for two of those runs to score to go up 6-1.
Northeastern State opened the seventh with back-to-back singles and then
Paige Gann doubled to left center to get them back 6-3. After a fly out, Martin hit a triple down the right field line to plate a run but the game ended on a ground out and fly out.
Jennifer Wolf (1-4) went 5 1/3 innings for NSU with four strikeouts and
Taryn Gray recorded the final two outs in relief.
Northeastern State out-hit Fort Hays State 7-to-6 with Gann and Martin both having two RBI.
The RiverHawks will head to Nebraska-Kearney on Saturday for a doubleheader to wrap up the road trip.
