Payne and Woods homer as NSU beats Pitt State, 5-3

PITTSBURG, Kan. – Jordan Payne and Dakota Woods homered for Northeastern State who picked up a 5-3 road win on Tuesday night at Pittsburg State.

The RiverHawks won their third MIAA contest in a row but it was NSU's first overall road win since the opening weekend of the season at St. Edward's.  Additionally, the RiverHawks took their sixth consecutive win over the Gorillas.

Pittsburg State (10-17, 4-9 MIAA) took the lead first in the opening inning with a two run homer out of the gates.  After a scoreless inning, NSU picked up their first run on a Butch Rea ground out before Woods hit a go-ahead homer to left to move them ahead the rest of the way.

In the fifth, NSU caught a break on a Pitt State fielding error that resulted in a run scoring to move them ahead 4-2.   The run off the error was important insurance for the RiverHawks later when PSU moved back within one on a one-out single up the middle in the eighth.  Payne in the next frame gave the RiverHawks some breathing room with a solo shot with two outs in the ninth.   Dustin Berrong came in during the bottom half of the inning to record his second save of the season.

NSU used four pitchers on the mound with Zach Parish (1-2) throwing the two scoreless frames out of the bullpen for the win.

The RiverHawks were outhit 11-to-9 by the Gorillas with Dylan Adams, Rea, and Woods all having two hit evenings.

Northeastern State (12-9, 6-4 MIAA) will be on the road to face Missouri Western State for a three game series starting on Friday.
