TAHLEQUAH – Northeastern State suffered a pair of scoreless setbacks on Senior Day with Central Oklahoma taking 2-0 and 3-0 decisions on Saturday.
With four games remaining on their schedule, the RiverHawks are now outside looking into the top-8 in the MIAA standings with a 11-11 record; Southwest Baptist holds a one game lead for the final spot into the tournament.
The shut outs were the first for NSU since they lost a 4-0 ballgame to McKendree in early March.
NSU batters recorded only five hits on the Broncho pitching staff, with
Jessica Boone and
Sierra Crick the lone RiverHawks with hits in both games.
In the opener NSU couldn't get much going on the offensive end despite UCO plating a run in the first and fifth inning.
The closest Northeastern State came to scoring was in the opening frame were they had two of their three hits. Â
Paige Gann hit a single to left with Crick trying to score from second, she would be called out at the plate. Â
NSU would not have a runner in scoring position the rest of the way, as they struck out 12 times to Central Oklahoma.
Mollie Carter (1-2) got the start and went four innings,
Taryn Gray came in and threw three scoreless frames out of the bullpen.
In the nightcap, Central Oklahoma (38-8, 18-4 MIAA) plated all their runs in the opening frame on NSU starter
Jennifer Wolf (11-8) who struck out five batters.
Northeastern State went hitless until Boone recorded a one-out single in the fifth. The RiverHawks would get the tying run up to the plate twice but left without doing any damage.
The Bronchos out-hit the RiverHawks 11-to-2 in the back half of the doubleheader.
NSU (23-24, 11-11 MIAA) will close out the regular season with a two-day road trip to Pittsburg State and Missouri Southern starting on April 21.
