KEARNEY, Neb. – Northeastern State's road woes continued on Saturday with a 5-4 walk-off loss to the Lopers.
Â
As much as Rousey Field has been home sweet home for the RiverHawks with a 13-2 record, NSU is now 4-12 on the road this season.
Â
The RiverHawks trailed by a pair through the first two frames until
Dakota Woods tied the game on a double to right center to score
Bryce Davenport and
Butch Rea.Â
Jordan Payne added NSU's third run in the fourth for his ninth homer of the year to go up a run.
Â
NSU's lead was short-lived and UNK picked up the tying run in the home half of the fourth on a sac fly and then they got the go-ahead run in during the sixth on a passed ball. In the seventh, NSU put two with one out but they left the runners stranded after ending the frame on a pop-up and a line out.
Â
After going down in order in the eighth, Rea slugged his seventh homer of the year on the second pitch to tie the game at four in the ninth. However, the bottom half of the inning, UNK got a leadoff hit by pitch and then singled to put runners on the corners. With the game on the line, the RiverHawks bought
Zane Takhar from left to play with five infielders but the Lopers would find the hole in left center for the game winner.
Â
Northeastern State (17-14, 11-9 MIAA) out-hit UNK 11-to-9, with Woods going 2-for-3, and two RBI.
Â
Nolan Sturgeon went 3 2/3 innings in the start with four strikeouts,
Dustin Berrong threw 3 1/3 and struck out four as well;
Zach Poehl (1-2) recorded the final three outs and was the pitcher of the record for NSU.
Â
The Lopers saw their season record go to 11-22 overall, and 4-16 in the MIAA with the win.
Â
Zach Parish will get the start on Sunday at noon as NSU will look to prevent the road sweep.
