KEARNEY, Neb. –
Chad Reibenspies' four hit afternoon and a ten strikeout game by
Zach Parish turned out to be a winning formula for the RiverHawks who avoided a sweep on Sunday, beating Nebraska-Kearney 11-5.
Northeastern State will return home from their four game MIAA road trip 1-3 and are now 12-9 overall in league play. The RiverHawks will return to the friendly confines of Thomas C. Rousey Field for an important four game home stand against Central Oklahoma and #17 Emporia State this upcoming week.
The RiverHawks never trailed on Sunday and were up 8-0 through the first five innings. With the run support, Parish fanned seven Loper batters into the fifth inning before surrendering a two run homer in that frame.
Nebraska-Kearney (11-23, 4-17 MIAA) would add two more runs in the sixth inning to cut the RiverHawks' lead in half.
NSU picked up two runs through a pair of sac flies by
Dakota Morse and
Jordan Payne to increase their lead to 10-4 on UNK in the seventh. In the bottom half of the frame, the Lopers picked up their final run on wild pitch.
Reibenspies who hit a grand slam on Friday, cleared the fence for the second time at UNK with a solo shot during the eighth.
Parish (4-2) threw six innings and recorded double-digit strikeouts in his second consecutive start.
Daniel Faulk picked up a save for the RiverHawks for tossing the final three frames, with five strikeouts.
The RiverHawks (18-14 overall) put on a hitting show with 16, doubling the Lopers' total for the afternoon. Eight NSU's batters in the starting lineup collected at-least a hit and they drew nine walks on UNK's pitching staff.
Northeastern State will face UCO for a midweek matchup on Tuesday with first pitch scheduled at 2 p.m.
