TAHLEQUAH – Northeastern State remains undefeated and opened MIAA play with a 1-0 win on Sunday afternoon over Missouri Southern State.
This is the second season in a row that NSU has opened up with seven straight victories and in their last 25 matches at home, Northeastern State has won 22.
Melissa Giles' goal nine minutes into the contest was all the RiverHawks needed against Southern. The goal by the NSU senior was her 15th in her career and third of the season.
Despite the low score, both keepers had plenty of work with 17 combined saves. NSU true freshman
Brennan Hockett earned her first career shutout with nine saves in her second start.  Northeastern State has held teams scoreless five times this season and has outscored the opposition 23-to-3. Â
The RiverHawks' offense had 16 shots and eight corner kicks on the Lions with
Julia Mathis taking four shots,
Sarah Rector paced both teams with three shots on-goal.
Through four weeks of play the RiverHawks and Central Missouri are the lone teams without a loss on their records.
Northeastern State has now won seven in a row over the Lions (0-5-2, 0-1 MIAA) and this is the fourth straight meeting that has been decided by a 1-0 score.
The RiverHawks will be on the road for the next two weeks and is at Emporia State next on Sept. 29 for a 4 p.m. start.
