Big second half keeps NSU undefeated with 4-1 win at Emporia State

EMPORIA, Kan.  – Northeastern State used three second half goals to roll past Emporia State 4-1 on Friday afternoon to stay undefeated through their first eight matches.
 
Paulina Chavez scored a pair of goals for the RiverHawks in the win and the freshman from Broken Arrow, Okla. already has seven for the season which is second most in the MIAA. 
 
The RiverHawks would trail for the better part of the first half after they allowed an Emporia State goal at the 11-minute mark.   Chavez tied the contest 15 minutes later on pass from Paige Lorenzo that was in front of the ESU keeper.
 
Mariah Nicolet was involved with all the NSU scoring in second half starting with the eventual game winner at the 51-minute mark that was off a pass from Melissa Giles.  Julia Mathis added to the RiverHawks' lead 20-minutes later with a her 24th career goal and fifth of the season from five yards out; Nicolet would be credited with the assist. 
 
Chavez made the NSU lead 4-1 with six minutes remaining in regulation on a pass from Nicolet from 15 yards out.
 
Northeastern State narrowly trailed by one in shots with ten and corner kicks were even at six.

The loss Northeastern State sends Emporia State to 4-4-1 overall and 0-2 in the MIAA.
 
Friday's win kept the RiverHawks even with Central Missouri in conference play with a 2-0 record and it is the second season in row NSU has won its first eight contests.  
 
Northeastern State will head to Topkea, Kan. on Sunday to face Washburn at 2 p.m.
