RiverHawks drop road contest to Emporia State

NSU has three players in double-figures with Lauryn Blevins having a team high 13

EMPORIA, Kan. -- Northeastern State could not keep up with a hot-shooting Emporia State team in the third quarter to fall 88-66 on Saturday afternoon.

NSU (8-7, 4-4 MIAA) had three players in double-figures with Lauryn Blevins having a team high 13, Cailyn Long added 12, and Cenia Hayes scored 10.  Emporia State (11-3, 6-1 MIAA) with the win over the RiverHawks pushed their home winning streak at White Auditorium to 27.

Despite the final score, the RiverHawks led for most of the first half and only trailed 32-29 at the intermission. 

Emporia State opened the second half connecting on their first seven shots and despite the RiverHawks efforts to keep pace, they trailed 50-38 at the halfway mark in the third period.   When the dust settled at the end of the quarter the Lady Hornets outscored NSU 30-15.  Emporia State had five takeaways in the quarter and nearly doubled NSU's shots at rim with 17. 

Following a Long three-pointer midway through the third quarter, NSU went six minutes' in-between baskets, while Emporia State blew their lead past 20-points on a 17-3 run that lasted into the final period.

The Lady Hornets who opened the game shooting 2-for-12 through the first quarter, finished the contest with a season high field goal percentage (54.5), going 28-for-43 in the final 30-minutes.   Northeastern State was 45.8-percent (22-48) on the floor.

19 – Emporia State out-scored the RiverHawks 19-to-3 on points off of turnovers.
26 – Northeastern State was edged out on the glass 33-to-26 by the Lady Hornets; Blevins led NSU with five rebounds.

The RiverHawks will be off until Saturday, Jan. 20 where they will visit Central Oklahoma in Edmond for a 1:30 p.m. tip-off.
