HAYS, Kan. – A penalty kick goal in the third minute of overtime was the difference for the #18-ranked RiverHawks in a 1-0 loss at #14-ranked Fort Hays State on Monday afternoon.
Both of the RiverHawks' losses this season have come at the hands of the Tigers. Northeastern State is now 9-2-1, and 2-2-1 in the MIAA. With the win, Fort Hays State clinched an outright MIAA regular season title with an 11-2-1 record, and 6-0 league mark.
Northeastern State's defense withstood over 90-minutes of attacks from FHSU who held a 15-to-1 advantage on shots taken.
Thomas Salenbien stopped seven shots from crossing the net as NSU's starting goalkeeper.
The RiverHawks lone shot on-goal came off the foot of
Ben Watson in the 13th minute of the contest.
Joe Garcia also saw an 11-match consecutive goals steak come to a halt at Hays. The senior's streak is program and MIAA record, along with being tied for the fourth longest in the history of NCAA Division II history.
Northeastern State will conclude a six-match road trip on Friday where they will face Ouachita Baptist at 3 p.m.
