AUSTIN, Texas – A one-hit start from
Dustin Berrong highlighted an opening day split for the RiverHawks who won 4-1 in seven innings in the front half of the doubleheader at St. Edward's on Friday afternoon.  In the nightcap, NSU (1-1) batters struck out 15 times against the Hilltoppers (1-1) to fall 4-2 in nine innings.
Berrong struck out four St. Edward's batters over five innings and never allowed a SEU runner to reach scoring position in his first start for the RiverHawks in nearly a year. The NSU senior's last starting nod came coincidentally at St. Edward's on Feb. 4, 2017.Â
Out of the gates, Berrong worked with the lead after the RiverHawks notched a pair of unearned runs in the opening frame. Â Â In the third inning, NSU scored its third run on a wild pitch, and
Dylan Adams hit a sac fly to bring home
Zane Takhar.
The Hillcats scored their lone run in the sixth on a sac fly;
John Rains finished the game for NSU for his first career save. Â
Oscar Resendez Jr. had two hits and a RBI in the win.
In the back-end of the doubleheader,
Trevor Westmoreland homered with one out in the second inning to put NSU ahead 1-0. Northeastern State quickly gave up the lead in the bottom frame on a RBI single by SEU, and scratched up a run in the next two innings.  The Hilltoppers later added to their lead in the seventh scoring a run on a wild pitch to go up on the RiverHawks, 4-1.
NSU batters would not put together a hit until the eighth inning where
Zach Henderson scored the team's second and final run on a RBI single to left.
The RiverHawks were limited to three hits with
Ben Strahm (0-1) going 3 1/3 innings in his NSU debut.
The three-game series with St. Edward's concludes on Saturday with a 1 p.m. first pitch.
