RiverHawks fall short in doubleheader

EDMOND – Northeastern State came out on the tough end of a pair of losses on Friday falling 5-1 to East Central and then 5-3 in eight innings to Southeastern Oklahoma.

In the opener against East Central (3-4), the RiverHawks (5-8) battled back and tied the game at 1-1 in the sixth on a Jess Schuler double to right center.  Northeastern State would end up getting the go-ahead run on third with one out but stranded the runner on with a pair of pop-ups to end the inning.

The game was not tied long and in the sixth, the Tigers hit four singles to score four runs to get past NSU.

Northeastern State was limited to a pair of hits in the front half of the doubleheader.

In the nightcap, the RiverHawks were riding high in the opening inning with a pair of runs crossing home on a Schuler double to center, and a Haley Acrey RBI single.

After a scoreless inning, the Savage Storm scored an unearned on a NSU error to make the score 2-1.  However, a SOSU error in the bottom half of the inning would bring the RiverHawks back up a pair.

In the fourth, a one out homer would bring the game back to a one run NSU lead.

Northeastern State would go down in order in the fourth and fifth before Southeastern used a leadoff double to tie the game at 3-3 in the sixth.

The contest would end up going to extras with the international tiebreak going into effect in the eighth.  Southeastern with the runner placed on second doubled in the go-ahead run, and then added an insurance run on a single.  In the bottom half of the eighth, NSU went down in order with the placed runner being left on-base.

Southeastern (5-7) out-hit the RiverHawks 9-to-5 with Paige Gann having two of NSU's hits.

Gail Young (1-2) tossed a complete game in the loss with three strikeouts.

The RiverHawks will return to the field on Friday to play in the Eight-State Classic in Bentonville, Ark.
