MARYVILLE, Mo. –  Northeastern State's
Nolan Sturgeon stared down the tying run 90 feet away from home plate twice and recorded the final four outs to give the RiverHawks a 3-2 win at Northwest Missouri. Â Saturday's win prevented a series sweep of Northeastern State (11-9, 3-6 MIAA) by the Bearcats (10-9, 7-2 MIAA).
Â
The save by Sturgeon was his second of the season with
Jonathan Smithey (1-0) getting the win in five innings of work.
Â
The RiverHawks were out-hit 12-to-4 by the Bearcats but NSU did enough damage scratch out a run in-between the third and fifth inning.
Â
Jaxon Phipps scored Northeastern State's first run of the day on a single center in the third frame. An error on a fly ball in the fourth made the score 2-0 in-favor of NSU in the fourth, and
Reid Fehr hit the team's lone extra base hit in the fifth for their third run.
Â
Northwest Missouri scored both of their runs in the sixth with the first coming on a sac fly and the later was off a single up the middle.
Â
Zane Takhar singled in the eighth inning to bring his hitting streak up to 11 games.
Â
Northeastern State will host Rogers State on Tuesday in non-conference play at 2 p.m.
