BOLIVAR, Mo. – No. 11 Northeastern State passed a mid-season MIAA road test on Thursday afternoon and squeaked past No. 18 Southwest Baptist 5-4. The win is the RiverHawks' 41st in a row in MIAA regular season play and the third consecutive over the Bearcats.
Southwest Baptist got off to a 2-0 start in doubles after beating the RiverHawks on its top two courts.
Easton Parker and
Chantal Nosievici prevented a SBU sweep with an 8-4 win in No. 3 doubles.
Trailing into singles, the RiverHawks strung together four straight match wins to overtake Southwest Baptist.
Tatjana Stoll on the top court was the overall match clincher beating Jill Van den Dungen 6-4, 6-2. With MIAA matches being played out to nine points, the RiverHawks dropped its matches on the remaining two courts.
Karla Tomaic had a clean 6-0, 6-0 sweep at No. 6 singles and
Mayra Jovic moved to 10-0 this spring with a 6-3, 6-2 win at No. 3 singles.
Thursday's win moves the RiverHawks to 8-3 overall and 3-0 in the MIAA, while SBU falls to 4-2 (1-1).
Northeastern State's scheduled match on Friday against Lindenwood has been postponed due to weather threats in eastern Missouri. The RiverHawks will head out of the region and will travel to Florida next on Monday to play Georgia College and West Florida during Spring Break.
