Red Hot RiverHawks thump No. 7 Winona State and Augustana

EMPORIA, Kan. – Northeastern State snapped a pair of 17 game winning streaks against their opponents beating No. 7 Winona State 8-0 and Augustana 3-0 on Saturday afternoon.  The RiverHawks' Paige Gann hit her 40th career homer in the nightcap and Gail Young took a no-hit bid into the seventh during the opener against the ranked Warriors.

The RiverHawks turned the corner in the month of March going 11-2 so far and have moved their overall record to 16-10 overall.

Northeastern State's bats provided the framework for Young with three homers.  Kaleigh Hinkle hit a two run shot in the second and Jess Schuler cleared the fence to score three more in the following inning.

In the circle, Young sat down 15 straight Winona State batters before issuing a walk.   The NSU freshman ended the day three outs from a no-hitter with a single to open the seventh halting the bid.   Young would go to 8-4 this season and she struck out five Winona (20-3) batters.

The RiverHawks had 13 hits in the game with Hinkle (4-4) and Schuler (3-3) having perfect games at the plate.  Kyla Ibarra also homered for NSU in the seventh for her second of the season.

In game two, Gann homered in the RiverHawks' second at-bat to move them ahead 2-0 on the Vikings.  Hinkle scored the team's third run in the fourth to go up three.

Northeastern State fended off Augustana (18-5) who left ten on base including getting the tying runner at the plate in the seventh with two outs.  Young would come in the game to record the final out for her third save of the season.

Sydney Balderrama (8-3) tossed 6 2/3 scoreless frames and struck out six batters.

The RiverHawks will face No. 10 Minnesota State next on Sunday with first pitch scheduled for noon.
