EMPORIA, Kan. – Early runs by the defending national champions came back to bite the RiverHawks on Sunday with No. 10 Minnesota State taking a 6-2 win at Emporia State's Crossover Classic.
Northeastern State (16-11) finished the weekend 4-1 against competition who had a combined record of 85-22 at the time they faced the RiverHawks.
Minnesota State (19-5) leaped ahead of Northeastern State in the opening frame with a two run homer and extended their lead to five runs in the fourth.
Jess Schuler plated a run for the RiverHawks bottom half of the fourth before the Mavericks took a run back in the next frame.Â
Kaleigh Hinkle homered for NSU in the seventh for her fourth shot of the season.
Gail Young (8-5) went 3 2/3 innings for the RiverHawks with three strikeouts. Schuler finished the day with two of the RiverHawks' six hits.
Northeastern State will be off until March 23 where they will reopen MIAA play at Missouri Western State.
