ST. JOSEPH, MO --- The Northeastern State softball team dropped two 10 inning games to Missouri Western State at the Griffon Softball Complex here Thursday. The Griffons took the opener 3-2 and rallied for a 7-6 win in the nightcap.
The RiverHawks fall to 16-13 and 4-2 in MIAA play.
The last time the RiverHawks played back to back extra-inning games was on March 11, 2014 against Rogers State. Those however only went eight innings.
In the opener, NSU starter
Gail Young (8-7) took the loss throwing 183 pitches allowing two earned runs and struck out five. MWSU starter Kenzie Hilzer also went the distance throwing 177 pitches allowing one earned run and struck out four to earn the win.
NSU's
Sierra Crick picked up the RBI single in the second and
Kelsey Harmon's sacrifice fly in the fifth gave the RiverHawks the 2-0 lead.
Missouri Western answered with two in the bottom of the fifth to tie the game at 2-2.
From that point on the pitchers and defenses took over, as both teams left a combined 15 runners on base (NSU 7, MWSU 8).
The RiverHawks best opportunity to plate a run came in the ninth inning. A leadoff double from
Addison Elbon, and
Paige Gann reached on a throwing error. The threat was nullified as Gann was thrown out at second to end the frame.
Missouri Western was able to take advantage of the only NSU error of the contest to plate the winning run in the 10
th inning for a 3-2 victory.
In the nightcap, the RiverHawks exploded for six runs in the second inning to take what seemed to be insurmountable 6-0 lead.
However, the Griffion's slowly chipped away at the deficit with one run in the second inning, two in the third frame, one in the fourth and finally tied the game with two runs in the sixth inning knotting the score at 6-6. And just as in game one, Missouri Western pushed the winning run across in the 10
th inning for the victory.
Sydney Balderrama started in the circle for the RiverHawks in game two lasting three innings.
Alex Azua went three innings of relief. Young went the final three plus innings picking up her second loss of the day. On the day Young went 13.1 innings throwing 239 pitches.
Northeastern State will continue MIAA conference play with a doubleheader on Saturday against Northwest Missouri State. First game is slated to start at 10 a.m., with game two to follow.
