PENSACOLA, Fla. – No. 11 Northeastern State gave No. 5 West Florida nearly all it could handle on Tuesday but they would ultimately fall 5-3 on the road. The Argonauts opened the season as one of NCAA Division II's hottest teams and entered the match undefeated through its first 13 matches.
Regardless of the result for the RiverHawks (9-4), it served a good baseline in where they stand nationally heading into the final month of the season. Tuesday's showing was NSU's best against one of Florida's powerhouse tennis programs with the RiverHawks going 1-17 in their previous two meetings.
In doubles play, the RiverHawks could have come ahead 3-0 on West Florida on their courts. The Argonauts would edge out Northeastern State 9-7 in No. 1 and No. 3 doubles.
Mayra Jovic and
Karla Tomaic left as NSU's lone point out of doubles with an 8-2 win on court two.
Needing to respond with four singles wins, the RiverHawks got a major lift on the main court with No. 23
Tatjana Stoll beating out No. 11 Paola Coyos 6-4, 6-2. Jovic provided NSU's third team point and remains undefeated this spring at 11-0 with a 6-4, 3-6, 6-3 win at No. 3 singles. Looking for two more points, the RiverHawks fell in three sets at No. 2 and No. 6 singles to pave the way to a UWF home win.
The RiverHawks will return home with a split in Florida and return to MIAA action on Sunday to face rivals Central Oklahoma in Edmond.
