TOPEKA, Kan. – One day removed from a pair of dramatic home victories, Northeastern State suffered a pair of road losses on Tuesday afternoon to Washburn. The Ichabods beat the RiverHawks 7-1 and then 9-0 in five innings to sweep the MIAA doubleheader.
Northeastern State's lone run in the opener game came off the bat of
Kelsey Harmon who doubled to left center in the sixth. The RiverHawks did have opportunities to strike early and left two runners on base during the first and second inning.
Jessica Boone had two of NSU's six hits with
Gail Young (12-11) being charged for the loss.
In the nightcap, a five run first inning by the Ichabods halted any Northeastern State momentum, and were limited to three hits. Washburn would plate one more in the second and later three in the next inning.
Defensively, the RiverHawks did not to themselves many favors with four errors allowing five unearned runs to cross home plate.
Sydney Balderrama (12-6) was the pitcher of record for NSU in the second game.
The losses drop Northeastern State to 25-19 overall and 11-9 in MIAA play; Washburn advances to 32-8 (17-1 MIAA) with the sweep.
Northeastern State will go to Edmond next on Saturday to face the Central Oklahoma for a MIAA doubleheader.
