TAHLEQUAH -- Thanks to a pair of early goals, Northeastern State swatted No. 14 Emporia State for an 4-1 upset win on Sunday afternoon at DeLoache Field.
The RiverHawks swept their weekend in MIAA play to send the team to 3-2 and 8-3-1 overall. NSU handed the Lady Hornets their first league loss of te season to put them at 3-1-1 (8-3-1 overall).
NSU needed just three-and-a-half minutes to get on the board when
Sarah Rector took a pass from
Mariah Nicolet and put it into the bottom left corner of the net for NSU's first goal. Nicolet scored just 10 minutes later on a shot from outside the box that was just over the outstretched fingers of the Hornets keeper.
Emporia State picked up their lone goal in the 58th minute when Mackenzie Dimarco scored her 12th goal of the season off a deflection, though just seconds later
Paulina Chavez got a breakaway and scored to put the RiverHawks up 3-1. They added a insurance goal in the 77th minute off the right foot of
Callie Rucker that was tipped by the keeper.
The RiverHawks dominated every aspect of the match, outshooting the Lady Hornets 17-8. They also had 8 corner kicks compared to just two for Emporia State.The RiverHawks possessed the ball for 55 percent of the match.
The RiverHawks will be back in action on Friday night when they travel to St. Joseph, Mo. to face the Missouri Western Griffons. Kickoff is scheduled for 6 p.m.
