TAHLEQUAH – In a rare instance of playing as an underdog, Northeastern State edged out #19 Northwest Missouri 4-3 on Saturday.
Unranked for the first time in years, the RiverHawks have rattled off three straight wins since falling off the ITA Poll. NSU improved to 5-6 this season and 3-1 the MIAA.
Northeastern State got their work done in singles play with the match boiling down to
Betka Gombarova in three-singles. The NSU junior rallied back from a first set 7-6 loss to win set two 6-3. Gombarova would edge out Marta Ferrando 7-6 (3) in a third set tiebreaker for the overall match win.
Karla Tomaic won 6-4, 4-6, 6-3 in five singles. #32
Tatjana Stoll won her seventh match in a row 6-1, 6-1 on the main court. #29
Mayra Jovic blasted #31 Irene Recuenco in twos with a 6-0, 6-2 victory to bring her career regular-season singles record to 26-0.
The win over the Bearcats (11-4, 2-2 MIAA) is the 20th consecutive for NSU.
Northeastern State returns to action on Sunday where they host Missouri Western State at 11 a.m.
