NSU edges Bearcats, 4-3

TAHLEQUAH – In a rare instance of playing as an underdog, Northeastern State edged out #19 Northwest Missouri 4-3 on Saturday.

Unranked for the first time in years, the RiverHawks have rattled off three straight wins since falling off the ITA Poll.  NSU improved to 5-6 this season and 3-1 the MIAA.

Northeastern State got their work done in singles play with the match boiling down to Betka Gombarova in three-singles.  The NSU junior rallied back from a first set 7-6 loss to win set two 6-3.  Gombarova would edge out Marta Ferrando 7-6 (3) in a third set tiebreaker for the overall match win.

Karla Tomaic won 6-4, 4-6, 6-3 in five singles.  #32 Tatjana Stoll won her seventh match in a row 6-1, 6-1 on the main court.  #29 Mayra Jovic blasted #31 Irene Recuenco in twos with a 6-0, 6-2 victory to bring her career regular-season singles record to 26-0.

The win over the Bearcats (11-4, 2-2 MIAA) is the 20th consecutive for NSU.

Northeastern State returns to action on Sunday where they host Missouri Western State at 11 a.m.
