NSU softball splits at Fort Hays

HAYS, Kan. -- Jess Schuler was 3-4 at the plate with a home run and two RBI as the RiverHawks won game two of a doubleheader against Fort Hays State in MIAA softball action at Tiger Stadium here Monday.  The Tigers took game one 4-3.

Northeastern State moves to 20-13 on the year and 8-2 in conference play.

Schuler led the offensive assault in game two as the RiverHawks outhit the Tigers 12-6.  Eight different players collected at least one hit in the victory.  Addie Elbon was 2-3 with two runs scored, Kelsey Harmon was 2-4 with two RBI, Sierra Crick was 1-3 with two RBI and two runs scored along with Schuler's 3-4 day.

Sydney Balderrama's complete game performance improved her record to 7-6 on the year.  Balderrama allowed three earned runs on six hits and struck out four.

Fort Hays State held its only lead of the game after scoring two first-inning runs taking a 2-0 lead.  Northeastern State responded to tie the game in the second.  Singles from Haley Acrey, Harmon, and Alyssia Crick along with a Tigers fielding error tied the game at 2-2.

NSU used four hits and a Tigers error in the third inning to plate three runs and take a 5-2 lead.  Elbon doubled and singles from Schuler, Sierra Crick and fielder's choice off the bat of Harmon contributed to the runs.

The Tigers answered with two runs of their own in the third to cut the NSU lead to 5-4 after three innings of play.
Schuler answered in the fourth inning with her fourth home run of the year extending the NSU lead to 6-4.  Cameron Conrad's RBI single in the fifth inning pushed the RiverHawks advantage to 7-4.  Back to back doubles to open the sixth inning from Elbon and Schuler led to two more runs giving NSU the 9-4 victory.

In the opener, Schuler gave Northeastern State the early 1-0 lead with an RBI single that scored Alyssia Crick in the opening frame.  The RiverHawks would hold that lead until the third inning where the Tigers pounded out three hits of NSU starter Gail Young to take a 2-1 lead.

NSU rallied in the fifth inning with two-run to retake the lead.  Kyla Ibarra singled and scored on an Alyssia Crick single and Tigers error to tie the game at 2-2.  Madison Boyd's RBI single to right field gave the RiverHawks a 3-2.

NSU could not hold that lead, as the Tigers used three straight singles and a sacrifice fly to retake the lead and hold on for a 4-3 victory.

The RiverHawks will continue MIAA conference play on Tuesday with a doubleheader at Nebraska-Kearney.
