Big fourth inning advances NSU softball

EDMOND – The RiverHawks will fight on to play another day at the MIAA Championship.  A four-run fourth by NSU was enough to edge them past Lindenwood, 5-3 in the tournament's first elimination game at Broncho Stadium on Thursday.

Cameron Conrad singled in the go-ahead run in the fourth, and Kyla Ibarra added an insurance run in the seventh for the RiverHawks who improve to 27-26 overall.

Lindenwood (29-17) who out-hit NSU 11-to-8 will see their season end and their era in the MIAA come to a close.

Gail Young (18-12) spun her 25th complete game of the season on 124 pitches with a pair of strikeouts.  Her complete game total this year is the second most in NSU history.

Addie Elbon batted 2-for-4 at the plate, Ibarra scored two runs, and Conrad had a pair of RBI.

After two scoreless innings, the Lions tripled to left center with one out; then the next batter hit a 2-0 pitch up the middle for the game's first run.

The RiverHawks bats came alive in the fourth for four hits where they loaded the bases.  Cameron Conrad singled to right field to score Kelsey Harmon and Haley Acrey.   Alyssia Crick added NSU's third run on a single down the right-field line, and Conrad closed the inning off scoring a double-steal play.

Lindenwood grabbed two runs back in the fifth with a first-pitch homer to right center.

Ibarra opened the seventh off with her second homer of the season on a 1-0 pitch the skied over the left field fence.

The Lions would get the go-ahead run at the plate but the game ended on a ten-pitch at-bat that found Madison Boyd at second who turned the 463 double play.

The RiverHawks will return to the field on Friday for a 10 a.m. first pitch against Washburn.
