Opening tip
• Sophomore forwards
Britney Ho (NSU) and Ashton McCorry (PSU) teamed together at Bishop Carroll High School in Wichita. In the two collegiate meeting McCorry averages 3.0 points and 2.0 rebounds and Ho has scored at 7.0 point clip pulling down an average of four boards. Today's game will be the first time they have faced off in Tahlequah.
• Both PSU and NSU allow opponents to score 70 points this season and in the last meeting the Gorillas pulled out a 84-82 victory on their home floor. NSU shot 52.3 percent for the game.
• The RiverHawks allow 45.4 percent from the floor while the Gorillas allow 44.0 percent.
• When NSU holds its opponent to under 79 points it is 4-5 in 2020-21.
• Northeastern State has three players who score in double figures in sophomore
Zaria Collins (18.9), and senior duo
Cenia Hayes (16.0) and
Shae Sanchez (11.9). The RiverHawks have two players with 6.0 or more rebounds per game in Collins (6.2) and Hayes (6.6).
• Both teams have strong turnover margins; 2.42 NSU, 1.69 PSU.
• Northeastern State is operating at 25 percent fan capacity due to COVID-19 precautions at the Event Center.
• Thursday's game is one of seven contests taking place around the MIAA. The RiverHawks are 1-3 on Thursday's this season.
The series with Pitt State
• NSU held a series edge over the Gorillas until 2013, where Pitt State has won the last ten contest against the RiverHawks.
• In Tahlequah, NSU does have a 6-5 series edge.
• Northeastern State has dropped its last nine games in Pittsburg. 1997 was the last time an NSU team has beaten Pitt on their floor.
• Interesting note: Angie Havens (Jeager), wife of NSU's men's basketball coach
Ja Havens, played for the Lady Reds in the last win at Pitt.
• In the last meeting both teams set scoring series-highs in the 84-82 RiverHawk setback.
• As head coach at NSU, Bullock is 0-4 against Pitt State.
Gorillas notes
• The Gorillas are led in scoring by juniors Tristan Gegg (17.1) and Kayle DaMitz (15.3). Its leading rebounder, Maya Williams, averages 6.1 boards to go with 11.3 points per game.
• Pitt State scores third most points in conference with 71.2 but allows 69.5 on 44.0 percent shooting.
• The Gorillas make 7.2 3-pointers a game compared to the 3.9 for the RiverHawks.
• PSU leads the conference in free throw percentage at 82.3.
• The Gorillas play team basketball assisting on 14.2 of makes in 2020-21.
• Pitt State is amidst a two-game losing streak after dropping games at #4 Nebraska-Kearney and Fort Hays State. Following its win over NSU it went on a seven game winning streak. PSU is 4-2 in road games this season.
Looking back
• Northeastern State won its first double overtime game at Lincoln 89- 79 on Jan. 23. Every starter scored 10-plus points led by
Zaria Collins with 26 on 12-29 shooting in 47 minutes.
• The RiverHawks were without leading rebounder Hayes and were only outrebounded by six. Sophomore
Britney Ho turned in her first career double-double with 13 points and 12 rebounds, including five offensive.
• NSU led until the fourth quarter.
• The RiverHawks had 18 assists on 33 made baskets.
• In the second five-minute overtime period, NSU scored 19 points with ten coming at the free throw line.Â
Glancing ahead
• NSU hosts Missouri Southern Saturday with tip-off scheduled for 1:30 p.m. In the last meeting NSU was without leading scorer Collins and struggled down the stretch shooting 22.2 percent in the fourth quarter of the 70-64 loss.
Senior duo lead the way
• The top returning scorers for the RiverHawks are both seniors in 2020-21.
Cenia Hayes and
Shae Sanchez combined for 45.1 percent of scoring last season. The duo each stand 5-foot 9-inches and rely on the 3-point shot; they combined for 72.7 percent of makes from beyond the arc in 2019-20 and 55.3 during the current campaign. They are also key cogs for assists (41.2 percent), steals (42.3 percent) and blocks (65.0 percent). During this season they combine for 42.9 percent of points (14.0 per contest). When each fouled out at Missouri Southern the RiverHawks could not keep pace in the final minutes. They combined for 49 of Northeastern State's 82 points at Pitt State, the first time two players have scored 20-plus in the same game since Nov. 11, 2017. When both start the game NSU is 3-5. Sanchez had back-to-back games with career-highs in assists while Hayes notched her third double-double of the season at Rogers State. Sanchez has missed one game while Hayes has missed the last two.
Undersized? Big heart
• Sophomore
Zaria Collins has cemented herself on the top of opposing team scouts this season. She averages 18.6 points shooting 46.8 from the field, 6.2 rebounds and plays 37.6 minutes of action. Collins stands 5-foot 9-inches, but goes to battle in the paint and as a result leads the MIAA with 3.2 offensive rebounds per game. In the three games she missed NSU is 0-3.
