RiverHawks give #4 Hornets a scare in 5-3 loss

EMPORIA, Kan. -- Northeastern State gave #4-ranked Emporia State a scare taking a 3-1 halftime lead, but the Hornets would sting NSU with four goals in the second half, winning 5-3 Sunday.

Emporia State pulled ahead, scoring in the 21st minute before the RiverHawks got an equalizer on a PK goal from Livy Wagner in the 33rd minute.

Less than two minutes later, Hannah Stettler gave the RiverHawks the lead on a shot that went right of the ESU keeper.  Stettler added one more, getting the ball on a 50/50 header from an ESU defender.  Her shot from ten yards out went left far left of the Hornets keeper.

The Hornets (11-0-1, 5-0-0 MIAA) stung back, getting a goal in the 51st minute and an equalizer in the 67th.   They would later pull ahead with the eventual game-winner in the 71st minute and ice the contest, scoring for the fourth time of the half in the 82nd.

The loss drops the RiverHawks to 4-5-3 (1-3-1 MIAA).

Northeastern State returns home to host Missouri Western Friday at 7 p.m.
