TAHLEQUAH –
Nick Garcia scored his first career goal less than two minutes into overtime to give Northeastern State a 3-2 victory over Newman. The RiverHawks needed extra time for the second match in a row to emerge victorious.
Â
NSU held a 13-2 advantage on corner kicks and scored both of its late goals off passes into the box.
Â
Sam Scarth continued to rack of the points for the RiverHawks scoring his first goal of the season in the 8th minute. He now has seven points to lead the team.
Â
The Jets, however, would respond with tallies in the 9th and 28th minutes to hold a 2-1 advantage at the half. They held the lead for the next 53 minutes.
Â
James Doyle, NSU's physical defender, found himself in the middle of the box in the 81st minute on a cross to
Ryan McCully that he then passed off
Flynn Semmerling. After the deflection, Doyle rocketed a shot past the keeper into the lower right corner.
Â
After regulation had expired, the RiverHawks used their newfound momentum to force yet another corner. Scarth passed the ball to the near side where Garcia headed the ball to the back of the net for the victory 1:45 into the overtime period.
Â
Of NSU's 24 shots, eight were on target. Newman had just nine shots for the match.Â
Â
The RiverHawks used two keepers in the match with starter
Niklas Kirhoff making two saves playing 59 minutes and
Brett Ekperuoh recorded one in his 32 minutes in net.
Â
With the win, Northeastern State improves to 3-1 in GAC play and ends its busy week of three games in six days.
Following spring break, NSU travels to Fort Hays State on March 26 for a 6:30 p.m. matchup. The RiverHawks return home April 3 at 2 p.m. to host Ouachita Baptist for Senior Day.
