TAHLEQUAH -- Northeastern State hit four homers in the third inning, and it was enough to complete a three-game sweep of Rogers State, 5-4, Sunday at Thomas C. Rousey Field.
The 2001 season is the last time NSU had climbed to 12 games above .500 and have won eight straight at home.
"People were fired up; there's a lot on the line in every game," said head coach
Jake Hendrick. "These guys (NSU) have worked hard for a moment like that. The back-to-back-back homers got us going, those guys found some barrel, and that ended up being enough."
For a team that was picked tenth or third from last in the MIAA, they are heading into the final month of the regular season, 19-7 overall, and in second place in the Association standings with a 16-5 mark.
A two-out walk in the opening frame allowed for an early run by the Hillcats on a standup double to right-center. The RiverHawks would escape the frame with a bases-loaded strikeout.
Northeastern State countered in the bottom half of the inning with a bloop single to single from
Blake Freeman scored
Brayden Rodden in from second.
After a scoreless inning, the Hillcats loaded the bases with no-outs but only scratched one run off on a passed ball. In the bottom half of the inning, the RiverHawks went back-to-back-to-back with
Blaze Brothers, Rodden, and
Collin Klingensmith homering to force RSU to make a pitching change.
Jaxon Phipps would tag the new Hillcasts' pitcher with a solo homer to left-center to give them a 5-2 lead.
Rogers State would plate its third run on a double error by the RiverHawks' infield, allowing a runner to score from first. In the sixth, the Hillcats loaded the bases for the third time and drew a walk to get within a run of NSU.
Zeros would come up on the scoreboard the rest of the way.
Dakodah Jones finished the game stranding a RSU runner at second for his sixth save of the season.
John Rains (2-0) came in to start the fourth and went three innings, and stuck out two to earn the win.
The RiverHawks had seven hits, with Phipps having a 2-for-4 day at the plate.
Rogers State dropped its sixth straight game and is 12-13 overall and 9-12 in the MIAA.
The RiverHawks will head to Shawnee Tuesday to face Oklahoma Baptist for a mid-week non-conference meeting at 5 p.m.
