TAHLEQUAH –
Livy Wagner took a
Hayley Garcia header in the 106th minute and put it through the bottom left of the net for a 1-0 RiverHawk win Sunday afternoon at Gable Field.
Â
With the victory, NSU moves to 2-2 overall and 2-1 in MIAA spring matches. Newman drops to 1-5-2 (0-4 in MIAA) with the loss.
Â
The RiverHawks dominated the first half with seven shots, two of which being on goal, and the defense did not allow the Jets an opportunity.
Â
Hannah Stettler had both shots on goal with her first on a breakaway in the 10th minute. The Newman goaltender was aggressive and grabbed the kick with a forward dive.
Â
In the second half Newman played more aggressively on offense and six shots to Northeastern State's two.
Melanie Rice made four saves in the half to keep it tied 0-0.
Â
Garcia had a chance amidst a crowd in front of the net in the 87th minute that wouldn't go. Newman had tied twice already this spring but overtime came first.
Â
Myka Heimbach had the lone shot in the first overtime and had three in the game to tie for the NSU lead. The RiverHawks held a 4-1 corner kick advantage and had 14 shots for the match.
Â
It was NSU's first overtime victory of the spring and first double overtime victory since 2017. The RiverHawks have now won the last four against the Jets.
Â
Northeastern State plays its final weekend of spring regular season action next weekend. It will meet Missouri Southern in Joplin, Mo., Friday at 4 p.m. before a 1 p.m. kickoff with Central Oklahoma at Doc Wadley Stadium Sunday.
