TAHLEQUAH -- Following two warmup matches against Oral Roberts and Oklahoma Wesleyan, Northeastern State opens its 41st season of men's soccer Thursday, hosting Drury. The match marks the beginning of the regular season for both teams, with head coach Rob Czlonka entering his 11th season as head coach of the RiverHawks.
Returning Home
Due to off-season fieldwork and the playing season being moved to the spring of 2021, the RiverHawks did not play a match at DeLoache Field and made a temporary home at Gable Field at Doc Wadley Stadium, where they went 3-0. Back to 2019, the NSU's home finale was moved to Doc Wadley Stadium, with Oct. 19, 2019, being the last time NSU has officially played on their home pitch.
History with the Panthers
Northeastern State is 2-7 all-time against Drury and 1-2 at home when facing the Panthers. The last time the two teams met in Tahlequah resulted in a 5-nil throttling by NSU on Sept. 1, 2018.
Scouting the Panthers
- After being picked eighth in the Great Lakes Valley Conference, Drury opens its regular season with six straight road contests.
- Ben Taylor enters his fifth year as the program's head coach. His squad went 7-7 last season, and among their returners in 2021 will be last year's GLVC Freshman of the Year, Jayd Hamdaoua, who was the fourth-leading scorer in the league last year with seven goals.
History with the Miners
Northeastern State is 4-6-1 against Missouri S&T in a series that started in 1982. The RiverHawks have not hosted the Miners since 2015 and are 2-1 at home against them.
Scouting the Miners
- S&T opens its season on Sept. 2, with a neutral site contest at nearby Claremore with Midwestern State.
- The Miners finished their spring season with a 5-8-1 record, with all but one game decided by a goal.
- In the GLVC preseason poll, S&T was picked to finish in a tie for 11th place.
Coming Up
Following the homestand, the RiverHawks play their next four contests south of the Red River starting on Sept. 9 with a visit to Midwestern State.
