TAHLEQUAH -- Northeastern State plays its next four matches south of the Red River for the first time since 2016, starting with a visit to a pair of former Lone Star Conference rivals.  The #25-ranked RiverHawks will face the #23-ranked Midwestern State Thursday evening and face the #11-ranked West Texas A&M Saturday. 

Key Notes Following Week One

  • Northeastern State out-shot their opponents nearly to a 2-to-1 ratio and paced corner kicks 13-to-3.
  • The NSU defense only allowed five shots on-goal 
  • Outside of goalkeeper Niklas Kirhoff, Alex Guzman played the fulltime through the first two games under the extreme temperature conditions.
  • Flynn Semmerling is two matches away from playing 50 in his career at NSU.

History with the Mustangs
Thursday will be the 42nd meeting between the two programs and the first visit to MSU-Texas since their 1-0 win in 2016, with Trevor Reed scoring in the 88th minute.  Northeastern State has been shut out the last two meetings between the two in Tahlequah.  The Mustangs hold a 32-7-2 series lead dating back to 1994.

Scouting the Mustangs

  • Midwestern State opened the season 2-0 with wins over Missouri S&T and Rockhurst in contests hosted by Rogers State last week. 
  • Former NSU captain James Doyle is using his COVID year and is on the MSU-Texas roster for his final year of eligibility as a graduate student.
  • The Mustangs were picked to finish second in the Lone Star Conference and were ranked #23 in the United Soccer Coaches poll.

History with the Buffs
Saturday's meeting will be first for NSU at West Texas A&M since 2011 and 29th overall.  Northeastern State won 2-1 in the last meeting in 2017 which was hosted by the RiverHawks.  The overall series is led by the Buffs 16-9-3.

Scouting the Buffs

  • West Texas A&M was picked to win the Lone Star Conference and is ranked #11 in the nation in the United Soccer Coaches poll.
  • Finished the 2021 spring season with an 8-2 record and won the LSC Tournament Championship. 
  • The Buffs opened the season with a 3-2 win over Drury, a team NSU beat 1-0 last week.

The RiverHawks will play two neutral site contests at Lubbock Christian (Texas) on Sept. 16 and 18.
