BROKEN ARROW – Northeastern State newcomer
Emilia Cosatto impressed in her debut Sunday with a singles win but they would fall 6-1 in an exhibition to the University of Wyoming.
The RiverHawks entered the match with a tall task with two weeks of practices under their belt as compared to the Cowgirls who have been in action playing dual matches for well over a week.
Out of the gates, the Cowgirls controlled courts one and two, winning all but one game to take the doubles point from NSU. On court three,
Belinda Jayaprakash and
Melissa Vera led 3-2 early, but fell 6-4.
In singles play the RiverHawks' top two courts played a strong second set against Wyoming's top players.
Maria Popova took four games and
Alisha Moldakhmetova won three.
Cosatto had the edge on her Wyoming counterpart on court three and edged out a tiebreaker in her first set. In the latter, the native of Mexico gave the RiverHawks their lone point with a 6-4 win.
"I thought that today, top to bottom, was some of the best tennis these ladies have played since I've been here," said head coach
Tim McLane. "Very happy with our effort today. Wyoming is a very good team and they really put us under pressure today, and I thought everyone responded well and hung in there."
"I also want to say a big thank you to all of our supporters that showed up today, it was a good lift for the team."
Sunday's match did count for Wyoming who improves to 2-4 overall.
Northeastern State will be idle until Feb. 18, where they will head south to Texas to face Harding on a neutral court in Dallas.
