TAHLEQUAH – Northeastern State's regular season ended Sunday dramatically with two goals in the final 20 minutes to surge past Rogers State 2-1 on Senior Day. The win propelled them to the MIAA Tournament for the tenth consecutive season and locked the team as the number-7 seed.
The RiverHawks are set to travel to Emporia State, the tournament's number-2 seed, for the MIAA Tournament Quarterfinal on Oct. 30 at 2 p.m. A 2-2 draw was the result in Tahlequah between the two teams during the regular season.
Rogers State (5-7-6, 2-5-4 MIAA) entered the match Sunday in a must-win situation to qualify for the postseason and played with the wind at their backs in the first half. The Hillcats tallied its first goal in the 19th minute on a shot from five yards out.
With the offensive directions flipping in the second half, NSU controlled the possession of the ball and out-shot the Hillcats 9-to-3.
Eileen Jeschke netted an equalizer in the 71st minute for her second goal of the season.
The game remained tied for nearly 12 minutes before NSU connected off a corner kick from
Hannah Stettler.
Sydney Taylor knocked in the game-winner off a header and punched NSU's postseason ticket.
Sunday's win is the second at home over the Hillcats in three meetings and moves the RiverHawks to 7-3-8 overall and will close out the MIAA season at 4-3-4.
