The Setup

  • The RiverHawks have won their home opener in four consecutive seasons.  They have started 2-0 at home in three of the last five years.
  • Oklahoma Baptist will be Northeastern State's lone in-state non-conference game this season.  Saturday's game will also be the only time NSU will face a team out of the Great American Conference (GAC).  The RiverHawks were scheduled to face GAC member
  • Northwestern Oklahoma to start the season, but that contest was canceled due to harsh winter weather in North Dakota. 

Last Time Out...

  • Northeastern State rolled past Kansas Christian 87-41 in their home opener Wednesday evening.
  • Kansas Christian competed early with the RiverHawks and pulled in within three (10-7) with 3:39 left in the first stanza.  Northeastern State followed up with 14 unanswered points, and the game was never close the rest of the way.
  • The RiverHawks forced 23 turnovers, with Lee having five steals to lead the team.  NSU would outscore the Falcons 29-to-11 on miscues.  In the paint, the RiverHawks held a 40-to-14 advantage.
  • Northeastern State led for over 38 minutes, with the game being tied just once in the opening minute.  

Player Storylines

  • Ashton Hackler is NSU's top-returning scorer from last season … she averaged 7.6 points per game and made 18 starts as a true freshman … in NSU's season opener, she had a career best 20 points.
  • Courtney Lee had her first double-double with 11-points and 12-rebounds against Kansas Christian.  She played in 27 games last year and made one start. 
  • True freshman Mika Scott shot 4-for-8 and had 12 points off the bench in her first career game. Hayley Flores, made four treys and had 12 points for the RiverHawks in her debut.   
  • Bri Wietelman had a career-best 11 points in 18 minutes of action off the bench Wednesday.

Team Storylines

  • Tess Talo Tomokino and Aubrey Brown were named team captains before the season. Tomokino leads the team with 45 games played and 23 starts.
  • The RiverHawks have zero seniors on their roster with seven returners.
  • Graduate Assistant's Morgan Lee and Maegan Lee were four year letterwinners for NSU. 
  • The RiverHawks are entering their 11th season as members of the MIAA and 26th season as an NCAA Division II program.  
  • In October, Northeastern State was picked to finish in 12th place in both the MIAA Coaches and Media Polls.

About Oklahoma Baptist

  • Oklahoma Baptist split their games to start the season playing two MIAA schools.  The Bison would beat Washburn in a low scoring 44-41 contest. 
  • The Lady Bison opened their season with a home exhibition loss to Mid-America Christian, 58-41.
  • OBU forced 42 turnovers in their opening weekend and had 43 points off miscues. 
  • In the Great American Conference Preseason Poll, OBU was picked to finish in eighth place.

Series Notes

  • Oklahoma Baptist leads the series 15-13. 
  • First meeting came in the 1978-79 season, which was OBU's second season of women's basketball.
  • Due to membership changes, the two teams did not play each other for 20 years (1996-2016).
  • Northeastern State's last win over Oklahoma Baptist was on New Year's Eve in 2016 and was the final non-conference win for retired head coach Randy Gipson.
