TAHLEQUAH –
Brock Reller hit for the cycle as the RiverHawks crushed McKendree 15-0 game one, but the Bearcats get the last laugh Saturday, taking the nightcap 11-10.
The loss snapped a seven-game win streak and it is their first home setback of the season as the RiverHawks move to 8-3 overall.
Northeastern State had no issues figuring out McKendree's pitching slugging 14 hits in the seven-inning game. Reller hit a double in his final at-bat to complete the cycle, clearing the bases for a seven RBI game, the highest total for an NSU batter since 2015.
Blake Freeman was a homer short of the cycle scoring a pair of runs.
Collin Klingensmith had a three-RBI game and two hits,
C.D. White left with a three-hit game, and
Brayden Rodden scored two runs with two base knocks.
Jonathan Smithey (2-1) struck out five batters, with only one McKendree batter reaching scoring position.
In the nightcap, the RiverHawks got out of the gate hot, sending 11 batters up to the plate and taking a six-run lead in the first. The Bearcats returned the favor with six of their own in the next frame and took the lead on a hit by pitch in the third.
The RiverHawks managed to get back ahead, scoring three in the fourth before the Bearcats plated four more in the next frame to take an 11-9 lead on NSU.
Northeastern State plated a run in the fifth and got the tying run on in the last two frames but was left stranded.
Rodden had a three-RBI game, and
Matt Kaiser plated two.
Hits were even at 12, with McKendree going to 2-4 overall with the win.
The RiverHawks will look for the series win on Sunday in the finale at noon.
