HAYS, Kan. –
Jonathan Smithey needed two strikeouts Saturday to be NSU's new strikeout king; he ended up with a season-high nine in a 7-4 win over Fort Hays State.
Smithey passed his NSU former teammate Dustin Berrong who held the title since 2019 with 243.
A three-run sixth from the RiverHawks would be enough to get Smithey the win in his ninth start of the season, going 6.1 innings. All four runs would come unearned in the fifth, with a two-out error extending the frame.
Blake Freeman recorded his second four-hit game of the season; he doubled in two runs in the sixth to give NSU a 5-4 advantage.
Blaze Brothers,
Matt Kaiser, and
Dylan Hight had two-hit hit games.
C.D. White hit a home run for the fourth consecutive game and has six during that span.
Jake Bigham tossed a scoreless ninth for his fourth save of the season.
The win is the sixth consecutive for the RiverHawks as they improve to 24-12 (13-9 MIAA) and have won the season series over the Tigers. Northeastern State will go for the sweep Sunday at 1 p.m.
