Softball splits with 'Cats

MARYVILLE, Mo. – The ball flew off the bat Saturday with 13 combined homers hit in a doubleheader split at Northwest Missouri. The 'Cats hit five in the opener, slugging past NSU 12-4 in five innings. In the nightcap, the RiverHawks sent four over the fence to win 7-4.

Saturday's split halted a six-game winning streak for Northeastern State as they are now 20-17 overall (8-4 MIAA).

Sydney Balderrama hit an RBI single in the opening frame before the Bearcats smacked a three-run shot in the bottom half of the inning to take a 3-1 lead.  The homer barrage continued with Northwest slugging four more, including a grand slam in the fourth to go up 11-2.

Addy Wolfe hit her seventh homer in the fifth, scoring a pair to extend the game momentarily. A lead-off double in the bottom half of the inning led to a mercy-rule run to end the game.

Gail Young (8-6) was charged with the loss going four innings.

In game two, trailing 4-2 in the fifth, Alyssia Crick tied the game with her fourth homer of the season. The rest of NSU's runs came off the long ball, with Rhomie Bradshaw and Raegan Edwards hitting bombs in the sixth. Wolfe hit her second homer of the day in the seventh to extend the NSU lead to three.

Savannah Evans (6-8) struck out five, allowing two earned runs in the complete-game effort.

Northwest moves to 7-30, 1-11 MIAA with the split.

The RiverHawks head to Missouri Western Sunday for a doubleheader starting at noon.
