RiverHawks dealt setback in season opener

ROLLA, Mo. -- Flynn Semmerling scored his 34th career goal, but it would be in the final two minutes as Northeastern State dropped its season opener 2-1 at Missouri S&T Friday evening.

The goal came on a penalty kick as Semmerling moved into a fifth-place tie with Joe Garcia (2015-18) in the NSU career record book.

Northeastern State held a 16-to-10 shot advantage and was 12-to-3 on corners.

Neither team made an attack attempt until the 18th minute when the Miners made the first of their five first-half shot attempts. NSU didn't have a shot until the 27th minute, which happened to be their lone one of the half.

The RiverHawks came out in the second half on the attack landing six shots, four of which were on-goal in the first 15 minutes. However, it would be an unlucky deflection on an S&T shot attempt from 20 yards out that would sneak left of the goal for a score in the 61st minute. The Miners scored its second goal 20 minutes later, which proved to be the eventual game-winner.

Both of Missouri S&T's goals came off their bench as they won their season opener.

Miguel Torres paced the RiverHawks with four shots, and Semmerling had three.

The RiverHawks remain on the road and will travel to Springfield to face Drury at 2:30 p.m.
