JOPLIN, Mo. — Whitney Gentry connected twice for her first multi-goal performance of her career, guiding Northeastern State to victory in the process in a 2-0 triumph over Missouri Southern Friday night.
It didn't take Gentry long to find the back of the net, as the junior scored in the fifth minute on an unassisted try to give the RiverHawks the early 1-0 advantage. The NSU defense held MSSU to just two attempts across the first half, with the strong defensive effort supporting the early offense to keep the one-goal lead intact at the break.
The second half produced more goal-scoring chances for MSSU, as all three of their shots in the period were on-goal. Despite that, it wasn't enough to counter Gentry's second make of the night in the 65th minute, assisted by
Abagayle Barnes, as the NSU defense finished with their fourth shutout of the season.
The victory is NSU's third of the season, boosting them to 3-4-4 (1-2-1 MIAA). The loss drops the Lions to 0-9-2 (0-3-1 MIAA).
Northeastern State rounds out its four-match road trip with a visit to Warrensburg, Mo. to face No. 8 Central Missouri on Sunday, Oct. 8 at 1 p.m. in MIAA play.
