TAHLEQUAH – Northeastern State held on in singles Sunday and took a 5-2 home result over Southeastern Oklahoma.
The win is the 26th overall on the Savage Storm as the RiverHawks opened its season with a 2-0 mark.
"Really great win today against a very solid Southeastern team," said head coach
Tim McLane. "We played a much better doubles point than yesterday, but we need to do a better job carrying that energy over into our singles."
"They (Southeastern) came out and put us under some pressure early in singles, but that was a major gut check for us to find a way back into the match. Really happy with the way we buckled down and worked our way back in to get a big win."
Belinda Jayaprakash and
Valeria Teran earned a 6-2 win on court two in doubles, and
Emilia Cosatto and
Leah Gonzales-Edwards won 6-3 on court three to give NSU the early point.
In singles, Southeastern handed NSU a default win on court six, and Teran claimed her second win 6-0, 6-2 to get the RiverHawks within match point. Southeastern took court four and claimed first-set wins on courts one and three.
Emilia Cosatto lost her first set 6-3 on the main court before claiming 6-1, 6-1 wins to give NSU the match.
Southeastern took a three-set win on court two as they fell to 2-2 overall.
The RiverHawks return to action Wednesday for a non-conference match at Arkansas Tech.
