RiverHawks drop MIAA openers to Rogers State

TAHLEQUAH – Rogers State found timely hits Friday as they edged Northeastern State 3-1 twice in their MIAA opener at RiverHawks Park.

The top-ranked Hillcats snapped a 14-game home winning streak for NSU.  Jaeden Rosenquist was the lone NSU batter to have a hit in both games, as the Hillcats kept the RiverHawks' bats in check by not allowing an extra-base hit.

Northeastern State plated a run in the first inning of the opening game and held the lead until the third.  A double steal by RSU with runners on the corners allowed the tying run to come home.  Rogers State added a run in the fourth on a lead-off homer and an insurance run in the fifth on an RBI single.

The RiverHawks threatened in their final at-bats by getting the tying run at the plate, but RSU closed the game on an 11-pitch strikeout.

Northeastern State out-hit the Hillcats 4-to-3, and Savannah Evans (5-4) struck out batters in the complete game effort.

In the nightcap, RSU plated a run in the second, scoring on an RBI double for the early lead.  The RiverHawks matched their score in the third, with Raegan Edwards coming home on a wild pitch.

Rogers State (21-2, 2-0 MIAA) grabbed a run back in the fifth on a solo homer to left field.  In the bottom half of the inning, NSU missed an opportunity to change the game's momentum after loading the bases with one out.  RSU would come out unscathed and added their third run in the sixth.

Rosenquist had three of NSU's six hits as they fell to 14-8 (0-2 MIAA).  Madison Heinle (5-3) struck out four batters and allowed six hits.

The RiverHawks return to action Friday for five games in Pittsburg, Kansas.
