Softball splits games at Fort Hays

HAYS, Kan. – Northeastern State split its final games on Sunday and came short of an MIAA postseason berth.  Fort Hays State took the opener 5-4, while the RiverHawks won the nightcap 7-1. 

The RiverHawks struck first, with Chloe Bohuslavicky hitting her 16th homer of the season in the opening frame to give them a 2-0 lead.  Allison Zanca moved the lead up to three in the next inning, scoring Emily Sampson on a sac fly.  

Fort Hays State (31-22, 13-13 MIAA) cut into the three-run deficit in the second, scoring on a sac fly and an RBI single.  After a scoreless inning, the Tigers overtook the RiverHawks with a three-run fourth. 

Bohuslavicky trimmed the Tigers' lead by one with her second homer of the game in the sixth inning. 

Savannah Evans (11-12) struck out two batters, with a pair of runs for the Tigers being unearned.  The RiverHawks had three errors in the contest. 

Two scoreless innings pushed through in the nightcap before the RiverHawks got an RBI triple from Delaney Mills and went up 2-0 on a Jaeden Rosenquist RBI single. 

Raegan Edwards extended the NSU lead to three with a solo home run in the fifth.  Madison Heinle and Zanca added two more runs in the sixth, hitting back-to-back doubles to give NSU a 5-0 advantage.

Emily Sampson hit her seventh homer of the season in the top half of the seventh, extending the RiverHawks' lead out to seven.  The Tigers prevented the shutout with two outs in the bottom half of the inning with a single up the middle. 

Heinle (13-7) struck out eight batters and two hits in her first batting attempts of the season.

Northeastern State closes its season with a 30-21 overall mark.
