JOPLIN, Mo. – Three Missouri Southern home runs spelled trouble for Northeastern State, as the RiverHawks were handed a 14-6 non-conference setback at Warren Turner Field Tuesday evening.
NSU (8-5) saw a single score in both the first and third before MSSU (12-2) countered with a seven-run third, making the day a brief one for
Christian Johnson in his fourth start, who could not draw an out in the third inning and was assigned the defeat.
The RiverHawks scored in five different innings, but failed to match the level of production the Lions found in the third, in addition to a five-run fifth. Ten base hits landed for NSU, though 15 figured into their struggles in containing MSSU.
Tyson Fourkiller had a three-hit day, while
Matt Kaiser added two.
Northeastern State opens official conference play with a three-game series in St. Joseph, Mo. against Missouri Western from Friday to Sunday.
