TAHLEQUAH – Northeastern State gave up a late run and had a seventh-inning rally fall short Saturday as they dropped a doubleheader to Missouri Southern. The Lions took the games 2-1 and 6-4 at RiverHawks Park.
Missouri Southern (25-10, 5-3 MIAA) jumped ahead in the opening frame with a two-out homer to left field scoring a pair of runs.
Emily Sampson broke the scoreless game for the RiverHawks with a homer to center field on her eighth pitch of the at-bat. Following a scoreless third,
Madison Heinle scored the tying run on an infield fielder's choice.
The game remained even until the seventh where the Lions escaped with a two-out run on a passed ball. Northeastern State got the tying run on second but the runner was left stranded.
Northeastern State collected eight hits with
Addy Wolfe having three.
Macie Sawney and
Emily Sampson both had two hits. Heinle (5-12) had a complete game and struck out four batters.
In the nightcap, both teams traded runs in the opening inning. The RiverHawks' Wolfe hit a double to left center scoring
Brynn Burchfield in from first.
The score remained tied at 1-1 until the sixth where the Lions plated four runs. They added one more with a run in the seventh.
Northeastern State's offense was silenced until their last out.
Raegan Moore broke up a one-hitter for Missouri Southern with a single through the right side. The RiverHawks got a run back later in the inning on an infield throwing error and Sawney hit a two-RBI single to center to get them back within a pair. However, NSU's rally came too late as they fell to 5-22 (0-10 MIAA).
Korynn Tindel (0-6) started the game and went 5.1 innings and Heinle recorded the final five outs.
The RiverHawks remain at home and will host Lincoln (MO) on Friday for a doubleheader.
