Pair of walk-offs spell doom for RiverHawks

HAYS, Kan. — Northeastern State fell in the ninth innings of both contests across a Saturday doubleheader against Fort Hays State, dropping 3-2 and 6-5 results to the Tigers.

Game one saw pitching win out, with only seven base hits across both squads. For the RiverHawks (10-12, 1-7 MIAA), C.J. Briley struck out five and surrendered only two runs across five innings of work, while Christian Johnson was the only other NSU pitcher to see time in the early encounter. Johnson pitched the remaining 3.1 innings and struck out three, but allowed the walk-off score to the Tigers (16-6, 4-4 MIAA).

Solo home runs from Gage Williams and Matt Kaiser in the fifth and seventh innings to account for NSU's lone scores in the matchup.

Game two saw a more active performance from the bats, as the RiverHawks finished with 14 base hits, with Isaiah Keller and Brooks Miller homering to continue NSU's seven-game streak of multiple home runs against MIAA competition. Keller's homer was part of a perfect four-for-four showing at the plate, while Kaiser went three-for-three.

C.D. White went seven innings on the mound in the late game and sat four FHSU hitters on strikes. Grant Parr and Cole White played in relief, with White allowing the second FHSU walk-off hit of the day in the bottom of the ninth.

Northeastern State finishes the series with Fort Hays State tomorrow afternoon at 12:00 p.m.
