PITTSBURG, Kan. -- Eighth-seeded Northeastern State pulled off a historic upset Sunday, defeating top-seeded Pittsburg State 3-2 in the MIAA Tournament Quarterfinal at Gorilla Soccer Pitch.
It marked the first time since the 2013 MIAA Tournament Quarterfinal that an eight seed toppled the No. 1 seed.
Brooke Dodd opened the scoring for the RiverHawks in the 36th minute, assisted by
Jaclyn Barritt and
Sydney Taylor.
Hannah Anderson added two second-half goals — in the 49th and 53rd minutes — with assists from Taylor and
Brynn Baldon to give NSU a commanding 3-0 lead.
Pittsburg State mounted a late comeback with goals from Macy Malik in the 54th minute and Ella Cazzavillan in the 77th, but NSU goalkeeper
Rebecca Partyka stood tall with seven saves while facing a season-high 25 shots. The Gorillas outshot the RiverHawks 25-8, but efficiency proved to be the difference.
The win sends Northeastern State (12-6-1) to its fifth MIAA Tournament semifinal appearance and will face their next opponent Thursday in Wichita, Kansas.Â
