PIEDMONT, Okla. — A nine-hit effort from the Northeastern State offense helped the RiverHawks to an 8-6 victory over Southern Nazarene in the early meeting before falling 9-0 in the late contest on Friday's doubleheader, played at Piedmont High School.
Six runs scored across the opening two innings of game one against the Crimson Storm (7-6), who only recorded two in response across that span of time. An additional run scored by Drew Hawkins off an SNU throwing error gave the RiverHawks a 7-2 lead in the fifth before a four-run answer in the sixth from SNU cut the matchup to a single run (7-6) entering the final frame.
NSU (5-5) would get back on the board a final time in the top of the seventh off a Hawkins RBI single before Bradeyn Sheofee survived a loaded bases situation in the bottom of the frame to collect the save from inside the circle. Gracie Turner started at pitcher earned her second victory, while Maddie Messenger and Madison Heinle homered alongside an additional Messenger RBI double and an RBI triple from Macie Sawney in the win.
The late game was limited on fireworks for the RiverHawks, who were held to two hits in a shutout loss to the Crimson Storm. In the defeat, six of SNU's nine scores were collected in the second inning. Heinle was dealt her second loss of the campaign from the circle. She contributed at the plate with a triple, while Sawney gave NSU their only other base hit of the five-inning game with a single.
NSU battles Arkansas Tech in Russellville, Ark. on Sunday at 12 p.m. and 2 p.m.
