Baseball Opens MIAA Play with a Doubleheader Sweep

GAME ONE - Northeastern State 12, Newman 5

Northeastern State's offense exploded for 12 runs on 11 hits as the RiverHawks rolled past Newman, 12-5, in their conference opener Saturday afternoon at McCarthy Field.

The RiverHawks (4-5, 1-0 MIAA) scored in seven different innings, including a three-run second and a three-run eighth to put the game out of reach. Tanner Almond led the charge with a 4-for-6 performance, including a triple and two runs scored. Korben Ford added a two-run home run, while Mason Ruiz drove in two with a double.

Northeastern State wasted no time getting on the board, scoring in the first inning before tacking on three in the second. The RiverHawks extended their lead with runs in the third, fifth, and seventh before delivering the final blow with three runs in the eighth.

On the mound, Gus Collins (2-0) earned the win, tossing 5.2 innings while allowing five runs on eight hits with four strikeouts. The NSU bullpen combined for 3.1 scoreless innings, limiting Newman (3-6, 0-1 MIAA) to just two hits down the stretch.

Newman's offense was led by Micah Kobuszewski, who hit a solo home run, while the Jets committed four errors that led to three unearned runs.
GAME TWO - Northeastern State 13, Newman 6

A dominant offensive performance fueled Northeastern State to a 13-6 win over Newman on Saturday at McCarthy Field, securing a second straight conference victory.

The RiverHawks (5-5, 2-0 MIAA) exploded for 13 runs on 18 hits, scoring in six different innings, including five-run frames in both the second and fifth. Hoden Yoder led the way with a 5-for-6 day at the plate, launching a home run and two doubles while driving in three runs.

Gage Williams added four RBI, including a two-run triple in the fifth. Tanner Almond went 2-for-6 with an RBI and two runs scored, while Jake Dillingham doubled and drove in a run.

On the mound, Braxton Jones (2-0) earned the win, striking out 10 batters over six innings while allowing three earned runs. The bullpen held Newman (3-7, 0-2 MIAA) to three runs over the final three innings, with Izac Sizemore tossing two scoreless frames to close the game.

Newman managed just seven hits but took advantage of 11 walks to generate offense. The Jets plated two runs in the sixth and added two more in the eighth, but it wasn't enough to slow down NSU's relentless offense.

The RiverHawks will look to complete the series sweep Monday at noon in the final game at McCarthy Field.
