SAN ANGELO, Texas –
Tegan Heaton picked up her second straight singles victory, but it was Northeastern State's lone point in a 6-1 loss to Texas A&M-Kingsville on Saturday.
Heaton, a senior, earned her first No. 1 singles win of the season, rallying to defeat Luna Jokanoic in three sets, 3-6, 6-2, 7-5.
"Kind of a bummer to drop that one when we felt like we had a bunch of opportunities," head coach Tim McLane said. "We had a big lead in doubles that we need to do a better job of closing out."
Heaton and
Adel Ismagulova secured a 6-3 win at No. 1 doubles, but the RiverHawks squandered a 4-1 lead on court three, falling 7-5 and conceding the doubles point to Kingsville.
In singles,
Lucia Bontempo split sets at No. 4 before dropping a decisive 10-3 pro set.
"There were plenty of chances to take some sets in singles as well, but it just felt like we made some mistakes in those moments because our fitness wasn't where it needed to be playing back-to-back days," McLane said. "And that's on me. I need to do a better job of making sure our conditioning is better and that we clean up some of these simple unforced errors."
Northeastern State (0-3) will look for its first win of the season Saturday when it faces Midwestern State at the Edmond Racquet Club.
