TAHLEQUAH, Okla. – Freshman Olivia Brown delivered a walk-off single to lift Northeastern State to a 4-3 upset win over No. 23 Pittsburg State on Friday at RiverHawks Park.
With two outs in the bottom of the seventh, Brown hit a grounder to second base that brought home Lauryn Heinle from third, snapping the Gorillas' 10-game winning streak.
Korynn Tindel extended her hitting streak to 10 games with two hits, as the RiverHawks improved to 15-28 overall and 8-13 in MIAA play.
Defensive miscues led to a run for both teams in the opening inning before Pittsburg State pulled ahead 3-1 in the top of the second.
The score held until the fifth, when Maddie Messenger tied the game with one swing. The sophomore launched a full-count pitch over the left-field scoreboard for a two-run homer, scoring Tindel from second.
Heinle led off the seventh with an infield single. After a strikeout, Madison Nance doubled to left, and Pittsburg State intentionally walked Madison Heinle to set up a force at any base. Following another strikeout, Brown came through on the second pitch she saw to give NSU its first ranked win of the season.
Gracie Turner (5-7) earned the complete-game win, allowing just one earned run.
The Gorillas fell to 31-10 overall and 12-3 in MIAA play with the loss.
